About the Artists: Michael went to his Grandpa's work to see the steam engines in the engine house and on the turntable when he was just 4 years old. He watched the streamline passenger trains come and go through his home town of Boone, IA. Boone was on the main line of the Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad.
His family rode the passenger trains to Chicago, many times when he was young. His Grandpa worked as a passenger conductor on the streamline city trains out of Boone, IA. His other Grandfather worked as an agent out of Ames, IA for the C&NW.
His Uncle also worked for the C&NW railroad, as a conductor, so there were many occasions to see trains. His passion for the railroad was born. He also tested and became a engineer on a passenger tourist line in Lake Park, IA. As well as working as a passenger conductor on several other tourist lines. He still loves chasing trains to photograph them, so his work is not done.
Most vacations consist of some type of railroad adventure. Michael & Sandy Stokka were corporate photographers for the C&NW Railroad for 15 years. They have won many awards for their pictorial photography. Their work has been shown in numerous state and national professional photographers contests and conventions. Michael also has 2 prints that travel in an International Loan Collection with the Professional Photographers of America.
Mike has been awarded the "Masters" and "Craftsman" Awards from the Professional Photographers of America. And Sandy has been awarded her "Craftsman" degree, and is close to having her "Masters" degree. In addition, she has her degree in photography from Hawkeye Tech Institute in Waterloo, IA. And photos throughout their careers. Their work is known for it's quality and clean dramatic lines.
They had access to many locations where the general public was not allowed. Their work was featured in several annual reports. They have produced thousands of interesting & creative images, in C&NW settings, that range from C&NW stream lined trains. To employees working, specialized equipment, and even unusual derailments. Michael was a conductor for many years on the C&NW Railroad in the early 1960's, which gave him a special relationship with the railroad and with the area's to photograph. Through the years they have also photographed other railroads, like the Union Pacific railroad that were partners in the "Great Midwestern Railroads" that forged the frontier moving west. They also photographed many other railroads, including several small branch railroads and several tourist line railroads. All photos are copyrighted and will have a C. (Certificate of Authenticity) from the Artist. Most of the photos were taken with medium format professional negative film. Then high quality professional scans were made to produce the high resolution images they are offering. There will be a few prints offered as part of their collection that were handed down from family members, that worked for the C&NW Railroad.
Those prints will have lower pricing as they are prints from their original negatives or high resolution scans from negatives, and are not part of both artist work. We also have some other unique pieces of artwork from other artists.
